3+ week, 6+ day ago (363+ words) With Boston's city council and mayoral election upcoming on Tuesday, here's what voters need to know. Santana appeared the most vulnerable incumbent following the September preliminary election, trailing behind his fellow at-large councilors with 12.6% of the vote. Massachusetts election results: Everett mayor, Quincy council, Newton parking war
3+ week, 4+ day ago (334+ words) It wasn't an enjoyable election night for Everett Mayor Carlo DiMaria, who lost his reelection bid amid heat over $180,000 in bonus payments. "I want to thank everybody, ya know, 18 years is a long run for a mayor," he said after losing to Everett City Councilor Robert Van Campen. Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch should take notice. He wasn't up for reelection, but six council candidates critical of the incumbent won seats on the nine-member board. Koch allocated $850,000 of taxpayer cash for statues of two Catholic saints at a public safety building and was proposing a 79% raise for himself. He has since revised that pay bump from $285,000 down to $225,000 from his current $159,000. That fiscal juggling will now go before a wary council. Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell, a one-time Republican rep, defeated challenger Estele Borges convincingly, 52.6% to 46.9%, according to preliminary reports. U.S. Rep. Ayanna…...

Appreciation: Bob Sales a newsman ‘addicted’ to success of the Herald
3+ week, 2+ day ago (581+ words) Bob Sales has his fingerprints all over this paper. Bob was among a few editors who studied the popularity of the old Herald American and pivoted to what readers craved. If you want it sugar-coated, buy a donut " as our old billboard stated " and that's what he envisioned. A paper without bias that let readers see all sides and make up their own minds. Bob Sales died Monday at the age of 89, and his family said his days as a Herald editor in sports and news were some of the happiest of his career. "He was addicted to newspapers," Bob's son, Jonathan, said. "He was ahead of his time," his daughter, Marian, added. The Herald's archives are filled with Bob's work, but that's not a surprise. Journalism is often called the first draft of history, and the stories keep coming....
